She sat on the plush cream-colored sofa, with its delicate soft pink floral print accented by blue stripes, soaking in the delightful early summer sunshine that streamed in through the window. A fluffy black and white cat lay curled contentedly in her lap. She gazed down, gently stroking her quiet companion's head. The tinkling of china could be heard coming from the adjacent room. Birds chirped cheerily in the garden. A horse whinnied from the nearby stable.
She heard a familiar voice outside. Her eyes turned towards the window. She couldn't quite make out what he'd said. The curtain began to rise as a breeze whispered through the window. It made her think of a feather floating on the wind. Her pensive eyes fell to the piano. Then, suddenly, there came the clip-clop of hoofs, a jingling, and the creak of a carriage. But, before she even had time to think, she jumped in surprise at the sound of her grandmother's voice in the doorway.
"Evangeline! You're not ready! For goodness sakes, stop daydreaming, child, and hurry to your room! Maisy! Maisy! Quickly, help Miss Evangeline with her dress and hair. Hurry, now."
